ABOUT ME
I'm a mechanical engineer with an interest in the internet of things movement. For the past 20 years I have worked as a mechanical engineer in the world of electrical and software engineers. I have many years of experience in the design of electronic units for the aircraft industry. My experience has exposed me to innovative designs and cutting edge technologies in the world of electronics. More recently, I have worked on connected devices, also referred to as internet of things products. I have created this website to share my experience and provide design services to help people achieve their product design dreams. Throughout this website I will post how to design an internet of things device. I will detail what is inside an iot device. The website content will be primarily from a mechanical engineer perspective, from creating drawing for manufacturing to how design a printed circuit board.

What is the Internet of Things
For the past 10 years, almost at the time when the first iPhone was introduced, the tech industry began a movement called the Internet of Things. One might ask what is the Internet of Things? My take on it can be summarized in three words, "the connected device". Probably the most popular device is the Nest. As you know, the Nest is a electronic device connected to your home's wi-fi system to allow you to connect to it from wherever you are. Most people may think that a software engineer designed the unit, however without a team of electrical and mechanical engineers, the Nest would not exist. So how does this relate to a mechanical engineer. Well, in my opinion, there is a specific mechanical engineering discipline that is critical to the electronics industry. In industry they are called electronic packaging engineers, but they are really mechanical engineers that work with electrical and software engineers to develop electronic units. They are the ones responsible for developing and packaging the design. They work to create solid models, work with manufacturers, and find the best interconnecting solutions. During this internet of things revolution, they can be a crucial asset to help bring innovative ideas to life.
